Cory Gabehart Receives Gilson Sixth Man Award
Heartland senior Cory Gabehart was recently named a recipient of the Gilson Sixth Man Award. This award is designed to honor those student athletes who not only exhibit solid play on the court, but also exemplify teamwork and a willingness to accept one of the most difficult jobs in all of basketball, serving as a team’s first player off the bench. Players receiving this award are also chosen for their perseverance and determination to overcome personal challenges and difficulties.
According to the Huskerland Prep Report, Cory “Broke his leg in 8th grade, didn’t play. Broke his leg in preseason practice both his sophomore and junior season, didn’t play. Putting the pain aside, he went out again as a senior and completed it in perfect health, notching seven points and six rebounds per game. His love for the game and determination are inspiring.”
The award is named for the late Doug Gilson who died in a tragic automobile accident in September, 2001. For almost three decades Doug was an educator, coach, and administrator, and he had a passion for coaching basketball players and helping young people. The Gilson Sixth Man Award is funded by the Gilson family, including Doug’s brothers and their spouses. It is awarded to one boy and one girl in each of Nebraska’s classes.
