Junior High Homerooms Donate to World Hunger Relief

by Linda Koehler

What does word definition and helping to end world hunger have in common?  The junior high homerooms found out last week as they did both during a Thanksgiving week challenge.  The homerooms each went to the web site www.freerice.com and for 10 minutes defined as many words correctly as possible.  For each word correctly defined, the sponsors of the web site, mostly large corporations such as Macy's and Apple Computers, donated 10 grains of rice to the United Nations World Food Program.  The web site kept track of each student's total, and those were combined for a homeroom total and average per student.  Mr. Perry's homeroom, the Typhoon, got the most words correct, for a total of 5,700 grains of rice donated.  Mrs. Regier's homeroom, the Thunderbolts, were right behind with 5,640 grains of rice donated.  Mrs. Watt's Hurricanes donated 3,790 grains of rice and the Monsoon, Mr. Gray's homeroom, donated 3.590 for a grand total of 18,900 grains of rice donated by the Heartland junior high homerooms.  Individual students with high totals were as follows: Jordan Bittinger with 840, Mina Ortiz with 830, Abigail Bechtel with 780, Maelyn Huebert with 740, Michael Brune with 720, Sara Brune with 690, Trey Vlieger with 670, and Miranda Janzen with 650.
