What If...
by Tim Carr
The sixth graders used their imaginations and brainstormed some "What if..." scenarios. There were many situations they wondered about. What if I was a rapper? What if I had a million books? What if Nebraska beat the Oklahoma Sooners? What if we flew in the water and swam in the sky? What if there were no dreams? The students shared their lists with each other, then selected one and answered the questions. Here are some of their thoughts.
Do you ever wonder what the world would be like if there were no rules? It would be kind of cool because you wouldn't have to do chores. If there were no rules, I could watch TV all night, sleep in as late I want, and only go to school when I felt like it. Kids my age could drive cars. The bad things about having no rules would be people could get in trouble and get hurt. By Olivia
What if I didn’t know what to write? My page would be blank. When I handed my paper into my teacher, he would not be pleased. He would ask me why I didn’t complete my assignment. He would give me an F on it and I would deserve it. Then I would have to go home and face my Mom and tell her I got an F. So, that’s why I decided I better do my half a page assignment on “What If”. If books could talk, many, many, many kids would be very happy since a lot of kids do not like to read. There would also be a lot of kids who would be very, very sad, since a lot of kids also like to read. The reason a lot of kids would be happy, is because the books could tell them the story and they could just listen and not read. But a lot of kids would be sad because it would be hard to read with the books talking all the time. By Jonathan
What if the world broke in half? Would we need to move on to another planet? Would we be able to find water food? Would we need to live on half of the world? Would the Earth still spin? Would the people need to build new houses? Would your house be up side down? would the ceiling be the floor? Would the floor be the ceiling? This what I think would happen. We would have to move on one side of the world. By Megan F.
I was reading a book one night when something extraordinary happened. The book glowed, something hit me, and I blacked-out. The next day, I felt sore. I got ready and went to school. Kids at school started rumors like always about book characters coming out. They had come out of the books and some kids did not believe it, because they couldn’t see them. The creatures that had gotten out were causing chaos around the world. Some people thought it was awesome because some creatures were being good. This all happened because the books were restless. What if no one had names? Everyone would be called “hey you”. Adults would be called “Mr. or Miss.” That would be awful. I would hate that. Then someone would probably call their boyfriend or girlfriend “Sweet thang” or something else. My brother would be called “weirdo” from me. Boys would be called “dude” and girls would be called “dudettes”. That would be weird, at least I think so. People would not have as many friends. I would like my name to stay the way it is. By Darrian.
What if my dad never died? I wouldn’t cry when I think of him. I’d play with him instead of friends. I wouldn’t try so hard at things I know shouldn’t. People tell me I should stop trying that hard . I love my dad and miss him so much. I hope he’s proud of me for making the right choices and disappointed in my wrong choices. I would like to see him again. It would be great to see what my life would have been like with him. I know he loved sports and my mom says I act the same as my dad. He wanted me to be a football player for the New England Patriots, so I’m going to do just that. Just in case you’re wondering my dad’s name is Marty Dimmick 1971-1998. By Nick
What if electricity was never invented? Well, TV’s wouldn't work so you couldn’t see what’s going on in the world or around you. We couldn’t play sports because we wouldn't have machines to make the balls. Phones wouldn't work, so we couldn’t talk to anyone when we wanted to. Kids wouldn't be able to go to school. We would have to use animals to farm. People would have to wash the dishes by hand. We would have to use candles to light up our houses. Fires would occur because of candles falling over. There wouldn't be refrigerators and food wouldn't keep as long, so we would grow more of our own food. There would be no running water so we would have to go outside and use a pump. By Allison
What if I didn’t have a tongue? If I did not have a tongue I would not know what anything tasted like, I would not know what my favorite food tasted like. It would be very hard to chew my food and to swallow it because the tongue moves the food all around your mouth. Without my tongue I could not tell the difference between sweet and sour or salty and bitter. It would be difficult to talk and hard for everyone to understand what I was trying to say. By Kelli
What if people never got any older? Well, if people never got any older you would still look the same and stay at what your age is right now. Also, if you never grew up you would never go to high school or college and you wouldn't learn all of the stuff that you are suppose to. But the bad thing is, you would probably have to stay in the same grade and learn all of that stuff over and over again! My opinion is that if you stay in the same grade forever, you would probably be an expert on all of the stuff in sixth grade. But, the good thing is, you would get to be a kid forever and, if you are a girl and you don’t want your mom or dad giving your clothes away. They wouldn't have to because you would get to keep all of your favorite clothes. Another good thing is adults would never get older. But of course there would be no such thing as adults because they never got any older. Like for girls, they never want to get any older because they don’t want to be old they want to stay young and pretty. For some people, (like adults) when they are a kid, they have so much fun doing kid things. But when they are adults some of that stuff may change. But...no one can stay the same age forever, only if we could. But, it is also good to grow up to an adult, too. By Morgan
What if the TV wasn't ever invented? If the TV wasn't ever invented I would be so bored. The only good thing would be that our brains wouldn't be full of junk. We would have to come up with different games to play so we would have something to do. You could only listen to the weather on the radio instead of watching it on TV I think that if the TV wasn't invented we would have more time to do things because our eyes wouldn't be glued to it. By Leah
What if there were no rules in school? No one would listen in class, they would run in the halls, they wouldn't come to school. It would be hard to learn and hard to teach. Everything would be out of order. The students would have food fights and would always be mean to one another. I would hate not to have no rules. By Megan
What if I were 6 feet tall and I was in 6th grade? I would have to get on my knees to talk to someone, people would also ask me if I could do stuff like drive somewhere to do them a favor, and I would say I am only in 6th grade, but they would not believe me. I would be too tall to fit in my desk, so my teacher would have to get me a taller desk. I would have to duck to get through the doorways or I would hit my head. I would definitely be tall enough to make a good basketball player. Everyone would make fun of my feet, because I would have the biggest feet in my class. I would feel very weird being 6 foot tall in 6th grade. By Megan B.
What if we had recess all day? If we had recess all day everyone would be in shape and everyone would be having fun all day long. Then we would have sunburns and that wouldn't be fun. We would have lunch inside. No homework. It would get kind of boring. We would have to ask to go inside to go to the bathroom, get a drink, and that would be a lot. But some kids, like Nick, and some others would like recess all day and I’m included. So, there would be no learning, we would be stupid, no one would know how to write or read, and there would be no use for books. By Jeffrey
What if cats had no whiskers? “MEOW!!!!” My cat Fluffy just hit the wall again. She has been doing that often, ever since I can remember. Do they give eye checks to cats? I wonder sometimes. Maybe her depth-perception is off? Anyway let me tell you a story. My cat is different than all the other cats. She doesn’t have any whiskers!! We don’t know why, we even took her to the vet and he had no idea why my cat has no whiskers. I guess it’s luck, so I find myself thinking often, “What can you do with a whiskerless cat?” Oh, but where are my manners? My name is Chris. Anyway, you know my name so now I have to continue the story for you. The day after we took Fluffy to the vet, I had to come to school and our teacher asked if we had any news we would like to share. I raised my hand. “Yes, Chris?” I was speechless at first trying to put my words together so I wouldn't sound super dumb. “M-m-my cat has no whiskers.” That was the worst first day of kindergarten I ever had and the worst first impression I had ever given. First impressions are important. Well, I did have more friends after that experience, though they would ask if they could come to my house after school to see my whiskerless cat. She’s acted oddly ever since we brought her home from my mom’s best friend’s house. Their cat just had kittens. They were eight weeks old, we took one home, it ran into every wall, and fell into the water bowl. At first, we just thought it was just a phase but she kept on doing it. We worried, but in the end she is still fine. Weird, but fine. What can you do with a whiskerless cat? By Aubrey
What if we lived in a house on a cloud? We would have to ride on an escalator to get to school and come back from school. We would have to wake up extra, extra early to go to school, because some days it would take a while to ride the escalator and other days if the clouds were low, it might not take that long. If we wanted to fly in an airplane, the airplane would have to come to your house. If we lived on a cloud we would drink the rain. If we lived on a cloud, we couldn’t plant any fresh vegetables because there would not be any soil. If we lived on a cloud, we would have to be careful where we stepped because we could fall off the edge of the cloud and die. The bad thing is that when the clouds moved, the houses would move also. You would never have the same neighbors. Everyone would have a trampoline because the clouds would be so fluffy that if you would take one step, you would bounce up and down. If we lived in a house on a cloud, we might get to see the inside of a tornado. We might get to see a rainbow up close. Maybe the rainbow would even go through a house or two. By Sidney.
